4 Principal Update
Who has a meeting on the last week of school?
The conference Sabrina attended earlier this year was about “Beautiful work”, helping children understand their own work, and iterate on it. The instructional leadership team has also been asking, “How to get kids to care more about their work?” Next year the school is going to try to tie those ideas together into the curriculum, perhaps with the motto, “We do Beeutiful Work”.
Next year there will be more structure to recess with “junior coaches”.
Recently purchased more playground equipment, color coded balls for grade level, etc.
Discussion of whether we should get new soccer goals? Probably not a great idea because the field is used for so many things and kids run into permanent structures. But a pop up soccer goal would be great.
We will have 2 of each grade, Ms Finke will be a 3rd grade teacher.
The Vestal Cuckoo Bee is a thing https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombus_vestalis!
It would be great to see more communication/press release kind of things
Maybe something Emma could push, Christina knows someone at WW, David knows someone at KOIN, Reece knows someone at the Oregonian, should always keep in touch with Jacob at Montavilla News.
Depave will be doing its own press around the event on the 21st.
Should make sure any photo/press release forms go out at the start of the year.
Sabrina to work on a 1 pager to give to Jake for the start of year packet.
5 Treasurer’s Report
Treasurer Nicole out sick.
Everyone is excited that monthly reports and impromptu spending requests should be much easier next year with Money Minder.
6 Upcoming Events
June
11th - 5th Grade Promotion: David’s picking up cake for 5th grade promotion
Could use one more volunteer for setup
21st - Depave day: At capacity but come on by anyways. The goal is to tear up all the concrete in the outdoor classroom..
Summer and Beyond
Volunteer signup form for Montavilla St Fair will go out soon, Sabrina will be there.
Still investigating a potential Summer Picnic.
7 Prep for Next School Year
Just prior to the start of the meeting we realized that we cannot pass the Budget and Standing Rules for the next School Year. That must be done after the start of the School Year by the Oregon PTA Bylaws. We will instead provisionally approve the Budget and Standing Rules for use over the Summer.
David moves to pass the provisional Budget, seconded, approved unanimously.
Discussion: Katie R asked about the meaning of the “Actual Total” column on the Budget. Without Nicole present we are unsure.
Justin moves to pass the provisional Standing Rules, seconded, approved unanimously
Sabrina moves that we require Jake to have lighting every meeting that casts shadows from his curls on his forehead. Failed.
8 New Business
There is a new place that may be useful to the community for after care: We Belong, not child care or day care, but a place for kids to hang out. Hosted at the local church, though unaffiliated. They currently have enrolled a handful of kinders, and are looking for 10 or so older kids. Cost, if any, is unknown.
From We Belong:
We Belong runs through the summer! Our program hours shift to 11am-1pm. Plenty of spots are still available - Registration Inquiry Form
We will have a booth at the Montavilla Farmers Market June 22nd. Stop by for a farmers market scavenger hunt activity page and to check out our Wheel of Emotions activity!
Back to School night will potentially be a BBQ. Some discussion on activities like: kids get a scavenger hunt card to talk to all the specialists. Co-located with Resource Fair. Sabrina will share with Em who is coordinating the Resource Fair.
There will be more money coming in the next Biennium (10%) despite the overall State budget getting cut.
We should send William and Lola’s parents a card to let them know we are still thinking of them.
David encouraged everyone to engage with the OPTA.
Congrats to everyone for an excellent year!
9 Closing
The meeting was adjourned by Jake at 7:20pm. We hope to see everyone at our first PTA meeting of the 25/26 School Year on September 2nd!
